RTC Initiative
1) We sell durable, reusable, recyclable, biodegradable, dishwasher/microwave safe, plastic takeout containers to restaurants in the Del Ray community.
2) The restaurants sell the containers to their customers (when they need a container to take home the leftover food from their meal).
3) The customers that buy the container will then receive a discount on their meal.
4) The customer keeps the container and takes it home to be put in the dishwasher for later use.
5) Here's the best part: the customer can bring it back to any of the participating restaurants for more discounts and more uses!
Process (5 Steps)
This program was created by three TC Williams High School STEM Academy students. The Sophomores were challenged with creating a year long project of their choice. After much deliberation and compromise, they agreed on a plan to cut down on plastic and styrofoam waste in the Del Ray restaurant community. The students are passionate about helping the environment, making a difference in their community, and most importantly - solving problems.

What is the RTC Initiative?
RTCI is the Reusable Takeout Container Initiative in the Alexandria, VA restaurant community. This Del Ray program's purpose is to cut down on waste produced by plastic and styrofoam materials used by restaurants.

WHY THIS PROGRAM EXISTS
Plastic and styrofoam containers are commonly used once, and then disposed of. We want to implement this program to lessen Alexandria's negative environmental impact. As of now, 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris is in the ocean. This is something we can and will change!
